Kerala is a land of rich traditions, vibrant festivals, delicious food, music, dance and a deep sense of community. For Malayalis living away from home, keeping that connection alive becomes even more meaningful.
At the Kerala Association of Prince Edward Island (KAPEI), celebrating our heritage is an important part of what we do.
Keeping Traditions Alive
Festivals such as Onam and Vishu give us an opportunity to share the traditions we grew up with and introduce them to the next generation.
From traditional clothing and cultural performances to music, dance and Kerala’s famous festive cuisine, these celebrations bring a little piece of Kerala to PEI.
But these occasions are about more than tradition. They are about people.
Families come together, friends reconnect and new friendships are formed. Children get an opportunity to experience the culture of their parents and grandparents, while everyone gets to enjoy the warmth and togetherness that make these celebrations special.
A Community That Grows Together
Living in Prince Edward Island gives us the opportunity to experience a new culture and build a new life while remaining connected to where we came from.
KAPEI provides a space where Malayalis can celebrate that connection together.
Our cultural programs also allow the wider PEI community to experience Kerala’s traditions and learn more about the people who call the Island home.
Passing It to the Next Generation
One of the most important parts of preserving culture is sharing it with young people.
When children participate in cultural programs, learn traditional songs and dances, enjoy Kerala food and celebrate festivals with their families, they create memories that can stay with them for life.
Culture becomes something they experience—not simply something they hear about.
Looking Ahead
Our heritage continues to evolve as we build our lives in PEI. We can embrace our new home while carrying the traditions, values and memories of Kerala with us.
That is the spirit of KAPEI: celebrating where we come from, appreciating where we are, and building our future together.
Together, we keep our culture alive. Together, we make PEI home.
